Walk Thirty Three

July 24, 2011

Starting point for this walk was St Johns car park. The walk took a little under 4 1/2 hours and covered nearly 14 miles. The scenery and general feel good factor of this walk cannot be exaggerated. From St Johns car park I traveled towards Peel along the Heritage Trail for about 1/2 mile and next to the power sub station turned right – following the path to the Poor Town Quarry road. I then turned right towards the Quarry and about 1/4 mile along turned left and followed the pathway around the back of the quarry until I met the road. Going straight on towards the Staarvey I took  the footpath left towards the Lhergydhoo and Lhergycholvine. I then turned right at  the greenway towards Cronk-y-Voddy. The views along this walk are spectacular, with lots of old cottage ruins adding to the experience. The vistas approaching Cronk-y-Voddy feel more Austrian than Manx, and are really worth the walk.

Upon emerging from the greenway at the A3, turn left and walk for about 300 metres until you reach the road to Little London. Follow this to the Rhenass turning and carry on to Mullen Rhenass, Ballasale to Lhargee Ruy. When you reach the pathway to Beary Mountain turn right and follow this path to the Mast . Again views are fantastic. From here I walked down to the Dowse following the greenway  and turned left down the footpath to Ballacraine.  I wandered through the Ballacraine farm only to be told it wasn’t a public right of way. Fortunately the lady I spoke with was very accommodating and advised that they didn’t have a problem with ramblers walking through so long as they respected the Country Code.

I then walked towards Slieu Whallian turning right along the Heritage Trail to the St Johns car park.

Fantastic walk, great ramble with spectacular views across Peel and the  west coast.
